Higher Ability and Gifted Students

At Maiden Erlegh School, we are committed to providing enrichment opportunities and ensuring pace and challenge in every lesson for all students, including those of high ability.

In 2009, we became the first school in Wokingham to achieve the prestigious national  NACE Challenge Award for excellence in provision for high-ability students, and we have been successfully re-accredited several times since.

Students joining us in Year 7 are identified as High Ability Students (HAP) based on their Key Stage 2 results. Students may also be identified as Gifted if they demonstrate exceptional performance in specific subjects.

Class registers indicate which students are high ability, enabling teachers to ensure that lessons and homework provide appropriate stretch and challenge. Every department has clear strategies for meeting the needs of high-ability learners, and schemes of work outline the provision available to them.

Heads of Department ensure that HAP students have opportunities to develop their skills and talents both in lessons and through wider school activities. A range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities are offered throughout the year to further support and extend their learning.

To support progression, we run three targeted programmes:

  • Silver Programme for Key Stage 3 students
  • Gold Programme for Key Stage 4 students
  • Platinum Programme for Key Stage 5 students

Each programme follows a structured schedule designed to develop higher-level thinking skills.
